Exe Ladies 1st Team notched up their first win of the new season this weekend with a thrilling 4-3 win over Cheltenham on Saturday. As always, Cheltenham came to Devon looking to return home with three points and took the game to Exe right from the start. Exe had their defence tested early on but withstood the pressure and denied Cheltenham the goal they were so keen to score. It was Exe, then, who took the lead with a goalmouth scramble which was deftly finished by Emily Mitchem. The game remained fast with chances at both ends but Exe struck the next blow with another good finish from Mitchem. Cheltenham replied with a goal of their own but Exe were on a roll and goals from Lorel Wallis and Emily Townsend took them into half time 4-1 up. The game looked to be won but Cheltenham weren’t beaten yet and came out in the final quarter with two well-executed goals in quick succession to take the score to 4-3. It was a slightly nervy final few minutes but Exe resumed their composure and saw out the final moments calmly to claim the victory. Exe will go on to play Surbiton and Basingstoke next weekend, both away.
